Terrible- many of the recipes use Campbell's soup! - International Diva -
This is the first book that I have ever returned to Amazon. I bought this book as one of several "how to cook" books for a friend who is getting married. While there are some useful recipes (how to boil an egg, how to roast a chicken), about one-quarter of the recipes are taken verbatim from Campbell's soup cans, including the infamous green bean casserole. Some are other famous 'label' recipes such as tollhouse chocolate chip cookies. The recipe for tacos calls for a packet of taco seasoning; the instructions are identical to the package directions. You don't need a book to be told how to open a can or a seasoning packet and mix it with stuff. To me, that barely qualifies as cooking.

On the subject of gravy the author notes, "gravy is too hard; just buy jars of gravy and hide the jars!" Seriously? Of the apparently original recipes, some of them simply don't make sense or are just incredibly unhealthy. For a pasta with brie, the author instructs using a pound of brie with a pound of spaghetti for four people. A normal serving of cheese is about two ounces but that comes out to four ounces of brie per person, or about 400 calories and 120% of recommended daily fat intake -- just from the brie alone.

There are no illustrations or photos to aid a non-cook, which also limits the usefulness of this book. If you're looking for a good primer, I suggest "How to Cook Without a Book" by Pam Anderson or even "The Way to Cook" by Julia Child. If you're looking for healthier foods on a budget, try "Less is More."

This is a wonderful cookbook for anyone who wants to learn to cook with Tofu. This book teaches you the Basics of Tofu and has alot of recipes from Breakfasts to Desserts. I have tried the Pumpkin Pancakes, Lasagna, and a Dill Rotini, Yum. I want to try all the recipes in this book at least once. This book even has recipes for sauces, spreds and desserts, such as "Alfredo", "Mayonaise" and "Icecream". I highly recommend this book as long as you don't have any allergies to Soy. It also tells you how to buy and store different types of Tofu. Enjoy!!! I am.

Giant Book Of Tofu Cooking: 350 Delicious & Healthful Recipes Overview

It's been the super food of the East for at least two millennia, and it's finally made a name for itself here. No matter what dish it's added to--from soups to desserts--tofu makes the meal healthier and better. On its own, this soft, white beancurd has virtually no taste, but it has a remarkable ability to "drink up' the flavors and seasonings it's marinated in. Plus, tofu comes in different textures, so it's a perfect substitute for meat, fish, cheese, or eggs. You've probably heard of its almost miraculous ability to lower the risks for heart disease, cancer, and according to the newest research, Alzheimer's, but you may not have known how to prepare it. This comprehensive, all-vegetarian tofu cookbook celebrates tofu's versatility 350 ways, with easy-to-follow recipes that will expand your horizons and tickle your tastebuds: Tofruitty smoothies, Tofu huevos rancheros, banana bread, mock tuna salad, tofu "crab" cakes, tropical cheesecake escape, and even pecan pie!

The Giant book of Tofu Cooking - Clarence H. Stratton - Spanaway, WA.
Shows how much I knew about tofu! Did you know you can make a dessert with "silk" tofu (a tofu with a real creamy texture). I now cook with tofu, seeing so many wonderful meals and desserts that can be made with extra-firm, firm, soft and silk. It's not just for Oriental cooking any more! LOL - just had to add that one.

The All-New Complete Cooking Light Cookboook: The Ultimate Guide from America's #1 Food Magazine (Cookbook) is virtually identical to this one, only it takes up less space, and the font is larger which makes it easier to read. I made the mistake of buying both books, and since they are redundant, this one is going to charity. This book is ring-bound, which helps it lay flat. However, the pages tend to tear around the holes easily, requiring frequent repair with some type of reinforcement tape. I would pass on this one and get the other book instead.

    Good Ideas - M. Hanson -
It has a lot of good ideas. A lot of the recipes has stuff in it I've never heard of or wouldn't have around. Other than that, I love the lay out of the cookbook and it does have a lot of low calorie recipes.

Incidentally, regarding "Mary's Chocolate Chip Cookies" (p. 92) by Mary Bartz, "former director of the [Betty Crocker] kitchens and cookie expert," I happen to have it directly from Mary that she bakes these cookies at 350 rather than the 375 indicated.

The recipes in this book are stellar; it complements the basic Betty Crocker book very well. All are clearly written and so far I've had great success. Highly recommended. The recipe book is fun to read too.

The only "tiny" complaint I have is that not all the recipes are accompanied by photos, which is what I guess we are spoiled and used to when we have a photo cookbook.

I thought this was a wonderful collection of recipes. I received this as a gift when I along with a very nice croc pot. The fat can often be reduced with no harm to the recipes. Lots of flavor and goodness! This is a wonderful cookbook with fantastic, delicious recipes. The Everything Organic Cooking for Baby and Toddler Book: 300 naturally delicious recipes to get your child off to a healthy start (Everything Series) Review

I bought several organic cookbooks prior to my daughter reaching her 6 month mark. She is now almost a year old and this book takes the cake! There is a great variety of recipes and the book is separated into different age categories to make it easy. Many of the recipes that I am making her now are enjoyable for myself and other adults to eat as well. There's also awesome baked good recipes that use agave nectar instead of sugar and they honestly turn out better than the typical recipes I'm used to. I just love this book so much for so many reasons and it's definitely one of my "best buys" as far as baby purchases go.

Has a lot of recipes - joel - NNE
As my title suggests, it has a lot of recipes, most of which seem fine (to me based on a read through, baby's only had a small subset thus far).

The problem is the editing. I'm sorry that I actually bothered to read your book, but sentences like "Feeding before these cues are shown can lead to overfeeding and obesity (p16)" should not make it into a published book.

And that bit is immediately followed by bulleted section informing you of when your baby is ready for solids including, seriously,: "Baby can swallow nonliquid foods". Thank you, tremendously helpful.

Looks delicious - Jenny S - Mesa, AZ
I purchased this for a friend as part of the baby shower gift. I did go through it and found a whole bunch of delicious looking recipes that I would love to make for my 3 yr. old so I am also going to buy it! The recipes were simple and not time consuming which is what I need.

Complete waste of money - anna_r - San Jose, CA
I'm very disappointed by this book. It turned out to be a complete waste of my time and money.

I was looking for two things: some sort of a schedule of what foods can be introduced at what age, and good tasting baby food recipes - rather, combinations of ingredients. Recipe is such a strong word for baby food :) Since the target audience for this book is interested in cooking organic, you can safely assume that they all know how long it takes to steam cook carrots...

This book provided neither of the things I was looking for. Not sure if the author tasted any of the foods she suggests in the book - it sure doesn't look like it! And if you don't like the taste, why would your baby? I tried several recipes and they tasted simply horrible. In all honesty, I can't attribute this to bad cooking or bad ingredients - it's a simple puree made of fresh veggies after all! Let's face it: quinoa just doesn't taste good. Like most of the combinations suggested in the book. It was also very odd that they kept calling buckwheat 'kasha' - it's simply not correct. I am of Eastern European decent and the word 'kasha' doesn't mean 'buckwheat' - it stands for ANY cereal. Shows you how well the author did her homework! I wanted this book so that I won't have to waste my time trying dozens of various kinds of veggies/fruit combinations to figure out which ones taste good (I'm a working mom - yeah, yeah, I know, every mom is a working mom, though those of us with a full time job know the real difference!). After all, that's what I ended up doing. And this worked way better than the recipes from this author.

The second disappointment was the lack of any compact easy to follow schedule of when various foods can be introduced. The book does, however, have some information about organic foods (hello, I'm already interested in organics and know the pros and cons!) - and, ta-da! on breastfeeding and formula feeding (hello, my baby is six months old - I have figured this out by now!).

The point is - don't waste your time and money. Seriously. This book provided no info that I hadn't known and was useless in helping with making delicious purees.

Check Out Sabroso: The Spanish-American Family Cookbook (New American Family Cookbooks) for $6.13

Sabroso: The Spanish-American Family Cookbook (New American Family Cookbooks) Review

This cookbook is excellent. It features recipes of the Spanish -American culture, while also providing informative and entertaining information about the recipes. This cookbook not only focuses on delicious recipes, it also expounds on the history of four remarkable Spanish-American women who have remained friends throughout decades. These four women provide accounts of their friendship, as well as recipes for the many meals they have shared together. The recipes range from simple to semi-difficult. None are impossible, or take a ridiculous amount of time. The selection of recipes is excellent, and each chapter has its own table of contents, making that perfect recipe easy to find! I would recommend this book to anyone looking to liven up their recipe collection with some unique and delicious meals with some cultural history! This book is also very helpful if planning a dinner party. There are endless combinations of appetizers, salads, side dishes, vegetables, entrees, and desserts for all appetites.

Sabroso: The Spanish-American Family Cookbook (New American Family Cookbooks) Overview

¡Sabroso! is a compilation of more than 200 recipes, menus, and the stories of four lively, Spanish-speaking women who formed new homes and a close friendship far from their native homes of Spain, Peru, Argentina, and Colombia. Food has always been central to the friendship between the four women. From the first get-together, to every picnic, barbecue, birthday, party, holiday, and milestone shared through the years every woman brought a special dish made from a recipe from her native country adjusted with American ingredients. When they first moved to America they each realized how different the food was from their home counties. So they soon began to adjust, swap, debate and refine their recipes. This book is a collection of these recipes and the stories of their friendship and traditions lovingly compiled by the daughter of one of the women.

Thumbing through the book you can practically smell the food cooking and you can absolutely feel the friendship these four women have forged over the years. That a daughter collected their creativity for all to share is a dash of spice. I and a friend prepared the first dish I tried for a dinner party with several friends. I'll be dipping into this book many times!

Check Out Under the Table: Saucy Tales from Culinary School for $0.02

Under the Table: Saucy Tales from Culinary School Review

Katherine Darling is a young woman living in NYC in the publishing business. One day she decides that she wants to go to culinary school and hone the skills that she was introduced to in her family kitchen. She comes from a family that debates over what pies to make at Thanksgiving. I do not recollect the number but believe that there would be about 4-5 different pies served-although her family was not a fan of turkey.

At Thanksgiving she announces her big plans to her parents and grandparents to see what the reaction would be. Who would not want a chef in their home. I would love one.

Her book chronicles her experience through culinary school, from receiving her set of knives, apron and pants, through the various lesson, making stocks, dicing vegetables, cooking poultry and fish, breads and desserts onto the more sophisticated lessons.

What I truly appreciated about the books were some of the cooking techniques she shares with her readers. Simple little tricks that one may not have an appreciation for. Of course I always welcome a selection of recipes. The recipes she included are all quite simple, just a little heavy on the calories.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys cooking or wants a little insight into the lives of culinary school and the students. One of Darling's colleagues came from Michigan, having worked in the auto industry. As a twenty something year old he leaves his wife and children behind for 6 months to pursue an education in culinary school. I loved the stories of her classmates, students who were willing to try something different and take a chance.

As a first time writer, Darling has given us a true treasure. Her combination of a few recipes, six months of culinary lessons, some tales about the French chef instructors and a wonderful use of the English language has baked up a true culinary read. Readers can hear the accent of her Gallic instructors as they critique and praise the student's progress in the kitchen.

This book will stay on my shelf for the recipes and tips she has included alone.

Under the Table: Saucy Tales from Culinary School Overview

A deliciously entertaining memoir about one woman's adventures in the student kitchens of the legendary French Culinary Institute -- flavored with celebrity chefs, eccentric characters, and mouthwatering recipes

To anyone who has ever dreamed of life in a French kitchen, imagining days filled with puff pastry and sips of vintage wine, Katherine Darling serves up a savory dose of reality in this funny, fascinating, and altogether delightful account of her time spent slaving over a hot stove, wrestling with veal calves, and cleaning fish heads at the French Culinary Institute in downtown New York City.

As she goes from clueless amateur to certified chef, Katherine and her quirky fellow students learn the secrets behind the art of French cooking and frequently find themselves the objects of scorn and ridicule as their teachers wage psychological warfare over steaming pots of bisque. The kitchen, they soon discover, is no place for soft-hearted romantics. It's a cutthroat world, and no one ever made a soufflé without breaking a few eggs -- or cracking a few heads together. From the basics to the final exam, Darling reveals everything that goes into the making of a chef.

Filled with delicious food lore and trivia, and including dozens of classic and original French recipes, Under the Table takes readers deep into the trenches of one of the world's most prestigious cooking schools -- and shows what really goes on behind the doors of every great restaurant kitchen.

culinary school memoir ruined by catty, snobbish author - Constance R Anderson -
I bought this book because I love culinary memoirs, but doing so was a big mistake. The author is a snob, is gratuitously catty and nasty to the other women in her class (when a male student pokes her in the butt with a trussing needle, it's treated as a bit of harmless fun, but when another student--gasp!--commits the crime of being a middle-aged housewife, the claws come out and the sarcastic, snotty mockery reach their heights), and is lamentably narcissistic. There wasn't nearly enough about cooking, and there was too much about her narrow-minded prejudices. And after the first description of the female chef assistant as being like a cow having an epileptic seizure, any hopes that the narrator would be likable were out the window. I cannot recommend this book at all: it was a boring memoir by a thoroughly unlikeable person, and I wish someone had been there to warn me off of it.

Just Awful - Penelope - Memphis, TN
As has been noted in other reviews, the author is quite a snob, which becomes increasingly off-putting as the book goes on. Her scathing portrayals of many of the other females (Mimi, Cyndi, Penny, Ricki) makes one wonder if it is legitimate or just more of her competitiveness--it's funny that she seems to be so jealous of Mimi, who has more money, so she attacks her as being "older" and unable to cook, though Mimi ends up as a top student. She seems inconsistent with her background--early on, she is a "double major" in History and English, later she is "pre-med"--probably a Williams first to have a student doubling up on traditional liberal arts pre-reqs plus all the science and math courses required for med school. I just hated this book because in the end I found the author to be so flat out unlikable.

wonderful story - mikemac9 - Los Angeles, CA USA
If you ever wonder what it would be like to be so interested in cooking that you went to professional training school, this is the book for you. Written by a gifted writer this book will transport you to the French Culinary Institute in NYC. You'll meet the varied group of students that take the course, learn to fear the footsteps of the chefs teaching the course, get a sense of the ribald humor in the professional kitchen. I must say that one of the things I found most enjoyable about the book was the writing style; the book combines vivid descriptions, humor, and a story that moves along at a simmering pace (sorry, couldn't resist the pun!) There's even a few recipes thrown in to try on your own, although I quickly realized that my rendition is probably going to bear only a passing resemblance to what a trained cook could do. I hope there are more books in the author's future!

Spice and Spirit: The Complete Kosher Jewish Cookbook (A Kosher living classic) Review

Granted, this book is no frills. There are no pictures. Just lots and lots of recipes, categorized into: challah; dairy foods; soups; parve main dishes; meat & poultry mains; sides; cakes & pastrys; desserts & confections. It also has tons of information on kashrus and shabbat for beginners. It's like Joy of Cooking, but kosher. (Mind you, Joy of Cooking also doesn't have pictures. But it's a kitchen staple.)

I have a huge library now of kosher cookbooks and I have to say that no other book has a comprehensive collection of all the shabbat and kosher classics as Spice & Spirit. Recipes for different types of challah; cholents; noodle, potato, or broccoli kugels; blintzes; parve ice creams.

If you don't like the traditional recipes or if pictures are a must, I would point you towards Susie Fishbein and the Kosher by Design series, e.g. Kosher by Design, Kosher by Design Short on Time, and Kosher By Design Entertains. But I feel Spice & Spirit is a must have for any kosher home. Make it a gift for any new bride. It also has handy tips, like the amounts of flour necessary for doing mitzvahs like taking challah with or without the brocha.

Spice and Spirit is also available in a Passover edition.

Spice and Spirit: The Complete Kosher Jewish Cookbook (A Kosher living classic) Overview

Keeping kosher and celebrating the Jewish holidays receive an added, joyful dimension, with practical guidelines interwoven with spiritual insights into many aspects of Jewish life and observance. Recipes range from traditional favorites such as blintzes and chicken soup to Szechuan chicken, aduki-squash soup and many other international, gourmet and natural specialties. All in a clear, easy-to-use format with helpful symbols and numerous charts and illustrations. This cookbook is a staple in most Jewish homes.

The Food Snob's Dictionary: An Essential Lexicon of Gastronomical Knowledge Review

Wow no one is a bigger food snob than me but there was not one useful food term left out of this dictionary. I looked and looked and looked. I had some issues with the Broccolini segment but overall a grand job by all involved. This is a much better book than United States of Arugula! Oh and I did find one omission in the " W " section the word "wine" is not there. Strange since that is a vital part of any food snobs meal. Nevertheless I have read every food book on the market and this is a STEAL at these prices and real handy when you need to know your Quince from your Quinoa!

The Food Snob's Dictionary: An Essential Lexicon of Gastronomical Knowledge Overview

Food Snob n: reference term for the sort of food obsessive for whom the actual joy of eating and cooking is but a side dish to the accumulation of arcane knowledge about these subjects

From the author of The United States of Arugula--and coauthor of The Film Snob’s Dictionary and The Rock Snob’s Dictionary--a delectable compendium of food facts, terminology, and famous names that gives ordinary folk the wherewithal to take down the Food Snobs--or join their zealous ranks.

Open a menu and there they are, those confusing references to “grass-fed” beef, “farmstead” blue cheese, and “dry-farmed” fruits. It doesn’t help that your dinner companions have moved on to such heady topics as the future of the organic movement, or the seminal culinary contributions of Elizabeth Drew and Fernand Point. David Kamp, who demystified the worlds of rock and film for grateful readers, explains it all and more, in The Food Snobs Dictionary.

Both entertaining and authentically informative, The Food Snob’ s Dictionary travels through the alphabet explaining the buzz-terms that fuel the food-obsessed, from “Affinage” to “Zest,” with stops along the way for “Cardoons,” “Fennel Pollen,” and “Sous-Vide,” all served up with a huge and welcome dollop of wit.

    A major disappointment - J. A. Hoeltzel -
I bought this book on Amazon and what a trivial disappointment. Half of the entries are for chefs and food writers - almost all from NY, CA, or France. There are many other food meccas, hot chefs and products in the world (and in North America) but these writers seem very limited. So many current food trends and new products are left out. It almost feels that the writers talked to a few restaurants in New York, made a trip to California, and then spent the rest of the time on google to get some info. At times it's almost ludicrous as e.g. when they don't seem to even realize there's a difference in Austrian and German cuisines and influence (Yes they are different and in the south Tyrol of Northern Italy, it's Austrian influence, not German). I think they are trying to also be humorous but it's the same joke through the whole book of writing a ridiculous sentence using the word at the end of the definition. It stops being very funny after a couple of pages. I hate to sound like a snob but this book is one that soon will be collecting dust on a shelf if you purchase it unless you are perhaps from New York or California - for which it might have some parochial allure.

Make It Fast, Cook It Slow is the first cookbook from Stephanie O'Dea, the extremely popular slow cooking blogger: affordable, delicious, nutritious, and gluten-free recipes to delight the entire family.

In December 2007, Stephanie O'Dea made a New Year's resolution: she'd use her slow cooker every single day for an entire year, and write about it on her very popular blog. The result: more than three million visitors, and more than 300 fabulous, easy-to-make, family-pleasing recipes, including:

    • Breakfast Risotto
    • Vietnamese Roast Chicken
    • Tomatoes and Goat Cheese with Balsamic Cranberry Syrup
    • Falafel
    • Philly Cheesesteaks
    • Crème Brulee

--and much more. Make It Fast, Cook It Slow is the perfect cookbook for easy, quick prep, inexpensive ingredients, and meals that taste like you spent hours at the stove.

Great gluten free cookbook!! - Amanda -
This book has soooo many good recipes. It even has a recipe for cream of mushroom (or whatever) soup. That is something very hard to find gluten free. Bonus: she gives her review of how it went for her and how her family liked it and she is hilarious!

Great book! - Carol Ondra - Dyer, IN USA
Contains a vast array of slow-cooker recipes! I purchsed a copy for myself and my daughter. All those I've tried have been great, although I'm still making some adjustments to accomodate my slow cooker. My daughter has tried many, many more of the recipes and every one, with one exception, has been a huge success!

You don't really need this book. If you like your meals centered around a "bottle of your favorite pasta sauce" or regard Italian salad dressing as chicken marinade, then you probably already have all the tools you need to make these recipes on your own. If you hope the meals you prepare are inspiring and taste home-made, then keep looking - there are better slow cooker cookbook options.
