Cooking with Shakespeare (Feasting with Fiction) Review

Here are some of the fascinating facts that you'll find in Cooking with Shakespeare:

In Shakespeare's England, spits of meat were sometimes turned at the fireplace by means of a dog attached to a treadmill.

During Lent, people in Shakespeare's England were supposed to stop eating meat. They could, though, keep eating puffins, because those diving birds were actually considered fish. Stranger still, the tail of a beaver was considered fish, but not the rest of that rodent.

Sugar was so popular among the aristocracy that their teeth were often in advanced state of decay. Queen Elizabeth's teeth were described by a foreign diplomat as having thin lips and black teeth. Sugar was even an ingredient in one of the teeth cleansers of the day.

Shakespeare's plays are full of scenes involving food. Banquets play important roles in many plays, such as The Tempest and The Taming of the Shrew. Titus Andronicus concludes with a banquet in which a mother is served a pie made out of her two sons.

Flowers were often eaten in salads, including carnations, rosebuds, cowslips, and violets.

Characters often use food words insult one another. In Henry IV a nobleman is called "dish of skimmed milk," and in 1 Henry VI Talbot is called a ``weake

and writhled shrimpe." On the other hand, food words are often used as terms of endearment. Prince Henry calls Falstaff "my sweet beef," and Perdita is called "The Queen of Curds and Creame."

Shakespeare may well have written most of his plays while slightly drunk. Beer and wine were safer to drink than much of London's water supply. The average person, whether rich or poor, drank about a gallon of beer a day.

Shakespeare never drank coffee, ate a banana, or indulged in chocolate. Those items weren't introduced into England until after Shakespeare died. Tomatoes were known, but were considered poisonous.

Cooking was a sometimes brutal activity. One recipe instructs the cook to ``take a red Cock that is not too olde, and beate him to death, and when he is dead, flay him and quarter him in small peeces.'' Another one says, "``Take a capon and cut out the brawne of him alive.''

The most common flavouring agent called for by cookbooks was rosewater, found in about 20% of the recipes. The most common spices were pepper, ginger, mace, cinnamon, and cloves. Almonds and raisins are called for in about 10% of the recipes, even in meat dishes.

Some advice from a 1578 book about table manners: "When thou has blowne thy nose, use not to open thy handkerchief, to glare upon thy snot, as if thou hadst pearles and rubies fallen from thy braynes." The cookbooks that were published in Shakespeare's lifetime were intended for the aristocracy and the growing middle class. The lower classes ate very differently. For them, a typical meal was bread, cheese, and pottage made from whatever vegetables happened to be in season.

Table forks were not used in Shakespeare's England. People ate with a spoon, a knife (which they brought to the table), and their fingers. Table manners were perhaps a bit rough and ready. One etiquette book advised readers to avoid rinsing their mouths with wine and then spitting it onto the floor.

Many foods were thought to have special powers that could affect one's health. Raisins, according to one writer, would ``increase motion unto venery, and woorke to the erection of the yeard''-- that is, they enhanced sexual desire and gave men a Viagra-like boost. Another author claimed that an infant with the flu should be put to bed on a layer of cucumbers because ``feverous heate passeth into the cucumbers.''

Dietary experts believed that some foods were better for you in certain months. For example, in October, the wealthy were advised to eat apple tarts because they "greatly comforte the stomache." They were also, however, advised to "washe not the head in this moneth."

Bakers were not allowed to sell fancy breads or spice cakes, except during Christmas and Easter, and for funerals. They were also required to imprint their mark on every loaf of bread they sold, so that its maker could be identified if a loaf turned out to be too light or poorly made.

In most households cooking was done over an iron frame containing wood or coal. Wealthier homes had ovens and fireplaces for cooking. The kitchen at Hampton Court had three fireplaces, each one eighteen feet wide, six feet deep, and seven feet high.

According to one legend, Shakespeare died after drinking too much with his friend Ben Jonson.

Cooking with Shakespeare (Feasting with Fiction) Overview

Feasts, banquets, and everyday meals were central to daily life in Elizabethan England, a world reflected so lavishly in Shakespeare's plays. This book helps students and general readers learn more about Shakespeare's food culture. An introductory essay discusses the culinary customs of Shakespeare's era. This is followed by more than 180 recipes from Elizabethan times. Recipes are grouped in chapters according to types of food and are accompanied by modernized versions for today's chefs. Passages from Shakespeare's plays relate the recipes to his texts and help students use food to gain a greater appreciation of his world and works.

An introductory essay discusses food in Elizabethan society. This is followed by the heart of the book, a collection of more than 180 recipes from Shakespeare's world. Recipes are grouped in chapters on particular types of food, such as fish and seafood, pork, vegetables, beef and veal, and beverages, and are accompanied by modernized versions for contemporary cooks. Passages from the plays relate the recipes to Shakespeare's works and help students understand both his plays and the world in which he lived. The volume closes with a list of hard to find ingredients, a chart of wages and prices from Shakespeare's day, sample menus, a glossary, and a bibliography of period cookbooks, secondary works, and electronic resources.

Traditional Dominican Cookery Review

I wish I would have paid better attention when my mother was cooking. This book is a great refresher. It does not have 1,000 recipes but if you can master the ones in this book you will have thorough knowledge of the Dominican kichen.

Traditional Dominican Cookery Overview

Traditional Dominican Cookery contains 100 classic recipes for favorite Dominican starters, main dishes, buffet food, hot and cold beverages, desserts and cakes. The cookbook includes all the Dominican standards from sancocho to majarete, la bandera to morir soñando, as well as some lesser-known culinary gems like the strangely named rabo encendido and mala rabia. The recipes are set out in an easy-to-follow presentation, seasoned with background historical and cultural information and enhanced by anecdotes by the authors who, like our readers, come to Dominican cuisine from several perspectives.

Great book! - Carol Ondra - Dyer, IN USA
Contains a vast array of slow-cooker recipes! I purchsed a copy for myself and my daughter. All those I've tried have been great, although I'm still making some adjustments to accomodate my slow cooker. My daughter has tried many, many more of the recipes and every one, with one exception, has been a huge success!

You don't really need this book. If you like your meals centered around a "bottle of your favorite pasta sauce" or regard Italian salad dressing as chicken marinade, then you probably already have all the tools you need to make these recipes on your own. If you hope the meals you prepare are inspiring and taste home-made, then keep looking - there are better slow cooker cookbook options.

I really like this cookbook. Very simple, easy to use. Plus it's all about the crockpot! The author's blog is really great too.

How to Start a Home-Based Catering Business, 6th: *Become the top caterer in your area *Organize menus for parties, corporate events, and weddings *Market ... caterer (Home-Based Business Series) Review

I just wanted to tell you thank you for writing your book "How to Start a Home-Based Catering Business." I lost my job this past January and have been struggling like everyone else in this economy. Part of my challenge is that I want to do something entirely different from what I've done before, so I've been reading about various types of businesses when I came across your book. I have to say that it is wonderfully well written, chock full of great and practical information, and truly inspiring.

I've been doing odd jobs to keep kibble in the bowls and had the opportunity to coordinate a little fund-raiser event (20 people) in Brentwood a couple weekends ago for a friend who is running for office. Looking back on it now, I can say that when everything was set up and ready to go a half-hour before the guests arrived, it gave me a great deal of satisfaction. However, now that I've read your book (am actually on the second reading with lots of sticky notes!), I'm inspired to think about this as a real business, including the idea of going to cooking school (at age 55!).

For those who like food with flavor that is also nutritious and attractive, regardless of one's religious leanings, this is an excellent cook book.
One may disregard the ritual aspects of making the food an offering and simply eat delicious food that is relatively simply to prepare.
I am sending a copy of this book to my sister, who is not a Hindu nor an adherent to Krishna consciousness, but who is a wonderful cook in that the hopes that should I be able to visit her in the future she might cook a Vedic meal.
I highly recommend this cookbook to anyone even if you are not a vegetarian.

There are plenty of good recipes in a well organized format in this cookbook. The recipes are relatively simple and include "make ahead" suggestions to assist in party planning. A cookbook without photos is disappointing! Without visuals the reader has no idea how the finished product will look...thus a serious lack of stimulation..and interest.. sad because it might have some good recipes but I doubt that I will use the book very often.

Check Out From Here, You Can't See Paris: Seasons of a French Village and Its Restaurant for $7.94

From Here, You Can't See Paris: Seasons of a French Village and Its Restaurant Review

I just now finished reading the celebrated "foie gras" section; as a Francophilic reseller checking prices for this title, I noticed some of the reviews and got curious.

For all I know the large-scale editing could be better (or the book might be intended to stand as chapter-independent), but the 5-6 pages I read were quite well crafted, with varied and sensitive sentence pacing and inclusion of many insightful details.

If you can't get from one end of a compound or (perish the thought) complex sentence to the other, like so many young video-game-deranged ADHD cases apparently have trouble doing, this lovely slice of a beautiful if hard way of life will probably be too taxing to enjoy.

But for seasoned readers, it's a delectable read as far as I've seen (and it's fun to handle a book with traditional, ragged page signature edges for a change).

Foie gras production is a pretty inhumane business, but non-vegetarians won't be learning anything totally new about how the other half lives. The people are wonderful and real. I wish I too could visit the area, as one reviewer said she did, before it becomes a part of a bygone age!

P.S. Anyone generally interested in the proud and warring nations of France and Paris are encouraged to read "Fragile Glory" by Bernstein, a former NY Times Paris Bureau Chief -- it's delightful and informative!....

From Here, You Can't See Paris: Seasons of a French Village and Its Restaurant Overview

From Here,You Can't See Paris is a sweet, leisurely exploration of the life of Les Arques (population 159), a hilltop village in a remote corner of France untouched by the modern era. It is a story of a dying village's struggle to survive, of a dead artist whose legacy began its rebirth, and of chef Jacques Ratier and his wife, Noëlle, whose bustling restaurant -- the village's sole business -- has helped ensure Les Arques's future.

Sanders set out to explore the inner workings of a French restaurant kitchen but ended up stumbling into a much richer world. Through the eyes of the Sanders family, one discovers the vibrant traditions of food, cooking, and rural living, and comes to know the village's history. Whether uncovering the darker secrets of making foie gras, hearing a chef confess his doubts about the Michelin star system, or absorbing the lore of the land around a farmhouse kitchen table after a boar hunt, life in Les Arques turns out to be anything but sleepy.

Chock full of information! - Karoe - Atlanta, GA
I stumbled across this book in the library, and took it home. Loved it for all the detailed, really detailed information about life, food, cuisine etc. in a region of France to which I'd had no prior exposure. I was stymied at the outset by the poor editing, like others who have written here, but I found the content to be so riveting I tried to just ignore it as best I could. I was rewarded for my efforts...if you like this kind of thing (France, village life, food) this book is not to be missed. One week with a good editor would have made his story a masterpiece!!

Awesome - Dubitato -
Sanders has captured the life in a small French village and its wonderful restaurant. My wife, best friends and I organized a trip to France around Sanders' book. It did not disappoint. La Rec was unbelievable. My friend and I could not figure out how the restaurant makes money at 30 Euros a person for a wonderful meal (five courses, including some of the most elegant dishes we had in France -- the Lobster bisque and ravioli are beyond description, for example). We took many of Sanders' other suggestions, including a lunch at the cooking school in a nearby village, and found the experience to be wonderful. The only downside to Sanders' work is that Les Arques has been bought up by northern Europeans, with virtually no French people living there.

I Just Had to go After Reading the Book. - Collage Maven - KISSIMMEE, FLORIDA United States
I found a link to this book on the site of the B & B in Albas I was planning to visit during my trip to France last year. I bought & read the book and had to see for myself. Since my traveling companion & I were going to be in the area we e-mailed the owners of the B & B to make us a reservation.

It was the most marvelous meal I've ever had. Three hours long and there was no sense of time having passed. The owners were lovely and I have never seen a cleaner kitchen ever, anywhere. My only regret is that we didn't have time to see much of the village he writes about.

My dream is to go back & do it again. I'm so glad I read this book.

On Cooking: Techniques From Expert Chefs, Trade Version (3rd Edition) Review

One of the many neat features of studying at Cornell University is that, even if you're not enrolled in its famous School of Hotel Administration, you can attend one of the cooking and wine tasting classes organized especially for non-Hotel School students, and get at least a flavor of the five star culinary instruction provided by the chefs teaching at that school. (That is, you can do so if you're willing to get up an extra hour or two early on the morning of non-Hotel School student enrollment, and if you're lucky enough to beat the crowds or at least slip in as a substitute participant.) In addition to numerous recipes and pieces of valuable advice, information and memories - particularly of the last night, on which we had to put together a four-course meal, fine dining style, complete with menu, garnishments and perfectly laid table - Cornell's "cooking class" has enriched my kitchen by two items I have since found it very hard to do without: A professional grade chef's knife, and Sarah Labensky's and Alan Hause's "On Cooking," which we used as our textbook.

Much more than that, however, "On Cooking" is in fact a near-complete reference on everything related to the culinary arts, from the history of cooking to new foods developed in the 20th century, from sanitation and safety to nutritional values, from recipe writing to menu composition, from knifes and other pieces of equipment to edible kitchen staples, from the principles of cooking to various techniques and food presentation - and of course, on every conceivable kind of food, from coffee, tea, spices and condiments to dairy products, stocks, sauces, soups, red and white meats, charcuterie, fish and shellfish, eggs, vegetables, potatoes, grains, pasta, salads, fruits, sandwiches, hors d'oeuvres, canapes, breads, pies, pastries, cookies, cakes, custards, creams and frozen desserts. Along the way, numerous tables, diagrams and pictures illustrate and exemplify the given information, making it easy to digest and memorize. The book concludes with an extensive bibliography and recommendations for further reading, and a detailed glossary of essential culinary terms.

Recipes are chosen to match individual chapters, and provide both a practical application and a more profound understanding of the respective chapters' subject matter. They include everything from American and international classics (assorted muffins, scrambled eggs and eggs benedict, focaccia, club, Reuben and other sandwiches, minestrone, French onion soup, gazpacho, New England clam chowder, Cesar, Roquefort, Thousand Islands and other dressings, various mayonnaises, coleslaw, cobb salad, Asian chicken salad, salade Nicoise, potato salad, Thai noodle salad, spanakopitta, grilled portabella mushrooms, carpaccio, lemon curd, hummus, various salsas, guacamole, pesto, hollandaise, bolognese, barbecue, bordelaise, bearnaise, Madeira, mornay, tartar, bechamel and other sauces, various stocks, broths and consommes, polenta, various kebabs, pilafs and risottos, paella, falafel, quiche lorraine, pizza, cannoli alla siciliana, macaroni and cheese, fettuccine Alfredo, clams casino, gravlax, oysters Rockefeller, fillet of sole bonne femme, matzo balls, duck confit, chorizo, chicken cacciatore, coq au vin, chicken curry, pico de gallo, chicken and veal fricassees, osso buco, chili con carne, Swedish meatballs, assorted burgers, meatloaf, T-bone, pepper and other steaks, cassoulet, chateaubriand, tournedos Rossini, beef Stroganoff, entrecote bordelaise, boeuf bourguignon, Hungarian goulash, ratatouille, baked beans, spaetzle, gnocchi, hush puppies, roesti potatoes, gratin dauphinois, baked potatoes, crepes, applesauce, New York cheesecake, sabayon, frangipane, assorted pies, tarts and tortes, various meringues and sorbets, creme brulee, chocolate mousse, chocolate angel food cake, sponge cake, brownies, ladyfingers, Madeleines, toll house cookies, gingerbread cookies, buche de noel, and spiced cider) to more unusual dishes such as:

Chilled cherry soup
Perfumed shrimp consomme
Beet vinaigrette
Shallot curry oil
Walnut pesto
Nopal cactus salsa
Pink peppercorn beurre blanc
Crayfish butter
Zucchini bread
Potato cheddar cheese bread
Salmon and sea bass terrine with spinach and basil
Salmon croquettes
Grilled red snapper burger with mango ketchup
Tex-Mex turkey sausage
Sauted pork medallions with red pepper and citrus
Marinated loin of venison roasted with mustard
Roast pheasant with cognac and apples
Stuffed wontons with apricot sauce
Wild rice and cranberry stuffing
Goat cheese ravioli in herbed cream sauce
Spicy sweet potato and chestnut gratin
Grits and cheddar souffle
Potato-ginger puree
Cilantro puree
Grilled seckel pear with sherry bacon vinaigrette
Balsamic raspberries
Figs with berries and honey mousse
Kirsch mousse
Pistachio citrus cheesecake
Chocolate flourless cake
English muffin loaves
Oatmeal stout ice cream
Quince jam

At 1100+ pages a veritable brick, despite its size "On Cooking" has become as much a key part of my kitchen as my chef's knife, my tea infusers, and various other pieces of equipment. I don't harbor any intentions of becoming a professional chef (nor any aspirations to even remotely that level of culinary skills), but I love to cook, and this is one of the cookbooks I'd be least likely to part with - ever.

"Cookery is become an art, a noble science; cooks are gentlemen." - Robert Burton, British author (1621).

On Cooking: Techniques From Expert Chefs, Trade Version (3rd Edition) Overview

On Cooking is essentially an entire cooking course contained within an 1152 page book. This encyclopedic culinary book covers every imaginable topic from identification of foods, to demonstrating how to properly hold a knife to techniques and procedures (like cutting vegetables and grilling meats to roasting poultry and preparing sauces) and most importantly, creation of successful recipes. Many of the 750 recipes have step-by-step procedural photo sequences to assist the aspiring home chef. The recipe variety and complexity are one of the book's hallmarks. Basic recipes from collard greens and meatloaf to classic dishes like Crabcakes Benedict, as well as, new-style cooking like Duck Prosciutto with Fresh Mango being fine examples of the depth and breadth of recipe content.

On Cooking: Techniques From Expert Chefs, Trade Version (3rd Edition) Specifications

On Cooking is a celebration of the culinary arts that will benefit anyone considering cooking as a profession, as well as serious amateur cooks who want to improve their skills--particularly in butchering and charcuterie. Wolfgang Puck, Mark Miller, and Alfred Portale are just 3 of the 30 chefs who share with us their combined wisdom and know-how.

This mighty encyclopedia covers a wealth of subjects, including nutrition, food safety, and standardizing a recipe. The book does assume a fair amount of culinary knowledge and expertise when it comes to proper textures, cooking times, and accurately judging "doneness." There are recipes for more than 700 dishes, including classics such as Turnedos Rossini and Crabcakes Benedict--as well as the basics for making great sauces, stocks, soups, pastry, and so forth. New-style cooking also features prominently, with a delicious recipe for Duck Prosciutto with Fresh Mango being a fine example. On Cooking: Techniques from Expert Chefs is quite an achievement.

A must have for any cook! - Deano_20802 -
I have allot of cookbooks, but this is by far the best. It's a true manual of everything cooking related, along with fantastic recipes. I can't recommend this book enough, 10/10 from me!

Good for learning or re-learning the basics - avidreaderAL -
If you are interesting in learning the basics of cooking, this is a great buy. The book goes into great detail about sauces, desserts, main courses, etc., and builds a good foundation for learning more complicated cooking methods.
Recipes for classic dishes are included, though they are in "bulk" quantities. If you're not cooking for at least 25, you'll need to adjust the quantities to suit your needs.
This is a textbook, and it reads like one, but if you're interested in learning the fundamentals, I recommend this book.

Excellent resource - Vince J. Filippelli - NY, USA
On Cooking is an excellent resource for basic and mid level food knowledge. Besides recipes, On Cooking provides insights into food safety, nutrition, menu planning, history, knife skills and many other basics. On Cooking also contains many useful and tasty recipes to reinforce the skills presented in the book. On Cooking is an excellent "general" cookbook containing everything from salad dressings to desert. You should note that if you are a student and this is a required text, there are 2 versions of On Cooking under each edition. One being the complete version sold to institutions and another (probably available on Amazon) with a couple chapters removed and having a green cover instead of white. I'm not sure why this is done but you should know what your getting when you but it.

On Cooking - tony1z - NJ
Excellant how to text. Covers all cooking methods and foods. We used it as a text in Intro to Culanary Arts at the local Vocational School.
I will use it forever as a reference.

Food in Russian History and Culture (Indiana-Michigan Series in Russian and East European Studies) Review

These essays -- by a roster of accomplished contemporary scholars of Russian Studies -- are wonderfully accesible and informative. Readers with interests in folk culture and history, Russian studies (history, literature, whatever) and/or culinary history will feel like they've struck gold. The thirteen scholarly pieces, some with a few illustrations, cover a wealth of topics (see table of contents above)-- consistently well. It's anything but dry; Pamela Chester's article on the relationship between (state-) tormented poets Marina Tsvetaeva and Osip Mandelstam (and their uses of food as symbol and, tragically, their deprivation of it, later) is heartbreaking. Peasantry, the gentry, and the Eastern Orthodox church; brilliant fussbudget Tolstoy's vegetarianism is in here; the uses of food in the writing of Dostoyevsky; fasting and food fashions; Catherine the Great (hardly any tastebuds; hearty interest in 'presentation'); the new Soviet state with its ambitious dreams for the citizenry, and the ultimate cynical mess that resulted. Food as power, class marker, moral symbol, and solace. The roots of asceticism (Orthodox church).Unfortunately, Jewish life and gulag life has been omitted, and a careful list of the prices of foodstuffs in St. Petersburg in Catherine's time is all rubles and kopeks... so I couldn't tell what I might have been able to afford.. What's here, though, is very good. I'll look for Volume 2.

Food in Russian History and Culture (Indiana-Michigan Series in Russian and East European Studies) Overview

This Collection of Original Essays gives surprising insights into what foodways reveal about Russia's history and culture from Kievan times to the present. A wide array of sources - including chronicles, diaries, letters, police records, poems, novels, folklore, paintings, and cookbooks - help to interpret the moral and spiritual role of food in Russian culture. Stovelore in Russian folklife, fasting in Russian peasant culture, food as power in Dostoevsky's fiction, Tolstoy and vegetarianism, restaurants in early Soviet Russia, Soviet cookery and cookbooks, and food as art in Soviet paintings are among the topics discussed in this appealing volume.

Nuts in the Kitchen: More Than 100 Recipes for Every Taste and Occasion Review

Susan Loomis's cookbooks are written for any cook who loves fresh, simple ingredients and the magic that comes from spending a little bit of time in the kitchen. But they're also portraits of food-lovers around the world, and Nuts in the Kitchen is no different. Here's her description of Makram, who has a stall in her local farmer's market. "Makram is a big, burly Tunisian, with a smile like the sun and velvet brown eyes ... He hails me like long-lost family, clasps his hands, and looks to heaven when he sees Fiona." Okay now, don't you just want to go the market and meet the guy? Of course I went straight to the chapter on desserts (Coconut, pistachio, and chocolate macaroons; Crumbly almond cake) but she fits nuts into recipes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. She's a relentless scout (having traveled to Turkey and Thailand, for example), and she makes friends with everyone she meets. No wonder she has over 2000 friends on Facebook. I highly recommend this book -- and her others, too (my copy of The Farmhouse Cookbook is stained all the way through).

Tofu 1-2-3 Review

Let me outline the good stuff about this book because I really don't want you to miss anything and can't say enough great things about it!!
1) The first 3 weeks I cut out meat from my diet using recipes only from this book, I dropped 10 pounds without even trying.

2) My family didn't even know I was using tofu and they asked for 2nd's much more often and even when I told them it was tofu, the recipes I used were requested by them again.

3) I get to be adventerous in the kitchen (or at leas I feel that way) My favorite recipe (super hard to pick just one!) is Thai style tofu with Butternut Squash SUPER DUPER YUMMY! You have no idea! I'd never cooked anything with butternut squash before using this book.

4) I've never cooked with tofu before using this book. It has the tofu for dummies (my own title) section in front w/the simple basics PLUS more. Then, multiple sections of foods such as: entree's, desert, soups, etc etc to prepare. The recipes are simple and easy enough to modify to add your own zest (I prefer additional spicy and extra veggies). Every single recipe (at least half of them now and almost all of the entree's) I've used from this book were beyond fantastic.

5) The only thing I recommend, is if you have a question, go check it out online, eg.. I didn't know what 'Nutritional Yeast flakes' were but looked online, went to sprouts and got some and add it to tofu recipes that have it added (most of the time it's optional) as well as add it other things now too. There were only a few similar things in there that I'd never heard of, otherwise, a cookbook for anyone, simple, easy to follow, very very healthy.

6) I really meant it was easy to use - the index in back is great, just look up zuccini and it tells you every recipe in the book that contains zuccinni, as well as listing each one by it's titled recipe name. Most of my cookbooks just have the title of the recipe. This was great last time I had extra zuccini and wasn't sure what to make, found a few recipes that include it and went to town.

7) I really love knowing that I'm putting more healthy, home prepared meals on the table and again can't say entough how easy it is, and even more yummy than you could ever imagine tofu being!!

Great health and happy cooking!

Delicious, quick and easy recipes - Alexandra Cowan - Somerville, MA United States
I'm a lifelong vegetarian who loves to cook. Until recently, I was dating a vegan who was learning to cook. He picked up this book randomly at the store one day, and I have to say, I was stunned at how good the recipes are. There are a ton of unusual and unique ones that I've never heard of before, which is a nice change since most cookbooks tend to stick to the same vegetarian standbys. The sunny carrot tostadas on pg. 150 are absolutely fantastic and easy to make. I would highly recommend this book to any vegetarian who wants to expand their repertoire to include some easier but still delicious foods.

No-Fuss Diabetes Recipes for 1 or 2: 125 Healthy & Delicious Meals and Desserts Review

I am not diabetic, nor is anyone in my family, but this is one of my favorite cookbooks. Almost every recipe I've tried from this book is cheap, fast, easy, healthy, and tasty. I'm a very adventurous eater, but when cooking for myself, the biggest problem tends to be the cost of picking up boxes and bottles of ingredients that might only end up being used once. Most of the ingredients called for in this book are things I already have in the pantry or freezer anyway.

This is one book that will stay on my shelf for years to come.

No-Fuss Diabetes Recipes for 1 or 2: 125 Healthy & Delicious Meals and Desserts Specifications

From the first glance it's clear that this diabetes cookbook is different: the recipes are in large print. It's also different because each recipe makes one or two servings--no waste, no leftovers--for people with diabetes who are living alone or with one other person. No-Fuss Diabetes Recipes for 1 or 2 presents 125 recipes--both traditional and ethnically diverse--that "match good taste with good health" and don't require odd, hard-to-find ingredients. Each major section (breakfast, lunch, dinner) opens with 5 quick recipes that require no more than 8 ingredients and no more than 20 minutes to prepare. Most recipes are modifications of foods you've always liked: Huevos Rancheros, several types of muffins, Black Bean Burritos, Sweet and Sour Chicken, Chocolate Pudding, Scallop Fettuccini. Some are more quirky: Blueberry Fruit Pizza (not pizza at all, but a breakfast item made with pita bread, fat-free cream cheese, apricot preserves, walnuts, and blueberries), Sweet Potato Lunch, Lentil Spaghetti, and Middle Eastern Muffin Burgers (ground beef, couscous, and applesauce). Nutritional breakdown includes calories, carbohydrate, protein, fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, and fiber. --Joan Price

I really haven't made a lot of the recipes from this cookbook. A lot of the recipes are things that my husband and I won't eat. Maybe at a later time I will use it more.

i relied on other amazon reviewers to choose this book.
talk about spot-on 5-star reviews! this book covers a few simple basics, great pantry/refrig stocking lists which could make everything in the book, and get-real recipes and portion-control servings (without being starvation-servings).
i'm back to purchase one as an x-mas gift for a dear friend.

I eat a lot of from scratch food, usually on a vegetarian tilt. I bought this book for myself and my recently diagnosed daughter. To be honest, most of the recipes aren't something I see myself eating. It isn't what I eat, (salads, lean meats) but the quantities that I eat that cause me problems.

For someone who has little idea of how or what to cook, this would be helpful. For someone who has cooked healthy for years, it is redundant and ugly.
